Knapsack vs Boom Sprayer: Which is Right for Your South African Farm?

Spraying is one of the highest input costs on a South African farm — both in chemical and in labour. The right sprayer cuts both.

Knapsack sprayers

Best for plots under 2 hectares, spot spraying and orchards with limited tractor access. Battery-powered knapsacks have become the standard — they're faster, less tiring and give more consistent pressure than hand-pump units.

Mist blowers

Ideal for citrus, macadamia and table-grape blocks in Limpopo, Mpumalanga and the Western Cape. Penetration into dense canopies is far better than a knapsack.

Boom sprayers

From 5 hectares up, a tractor-mounted boom sprayer pays back in a season on labour alone. Look for stainless or polyethylene tanks, anti-drip nozzles, and a boom width that matches your tramlines.

Water and chemical handling

South African boreholes often produce hard water that clogs nozzles. Fit an inline filter, flush the tank after every spray day, and store concentrate out of direct sun. See our Spraying Equipment range for knapsack, mist and boom options.
