Maintenance Tips to Make Your Farming Equipment Last in the South African Climate
12 Mar 2026 · 7 min read · Agristart Team

Most equipment failures on South African farms are preventable. A 20-minute weekly routine is the difference between five years of service and two.
After every use
- Wash off chemical, mud and crop residue
- Flush sprayer tanks and lines with clean water
- Wipe down metal surfaces and apply a thin oil film on exposed steel
Weekly
- Check tyre pressures and bolt tightness
- Grease all fittings — bearings, pivots, PTO shafts
- Inspect belts and hoses for cracks (the SA sun is brutal on rubber)
Seasonally
- Change engine and gearbox oil per the manual
- Replace air filters — Highveld dust is no joke
- Sharpen or replace cutting parts (mower blades, disc edges, sprayer nozzles)
Storage
Out of direct sun and rain whenever possible. Coastal farms (Eastern Cape, KZN) should be extra careful about salt air — a light oil coat goes a long way.
